Fattoria Vassallo is a multifunctional, family-run organic farm with over 25 years of experience. Managed by Salvatore and Ignazio Vassallo, it cultivates a range of crops including nuts, grapes, and pomegranates, and raises native livestock.
The farm aims for total sustainability using renewable energy, groundwater recharge, and efficient irrigation. Biodiversity is promoted through local crop and livestock varieties. Visitors will explore the farm’s ecological infrastructure and learn about pest control, composting, and a unique case of aphid control via symbiotic ladybugs.
The second part focuses on the PRIMA-funded VALMEDALM project, exploring intercropping strategies in almond orchards to boost resilience, control pests, and enrich soil microbiota. Fattoria Vassallo is one of six demonstration farms across five countries involved in this research.

The Carbonìa farm, located near Aragona and Santa Elisabetta, spans 88 hectares and has been owned by the same family for four generations. Managed today by Eugenia Gino, it is certified organic since 1996 and integrates agroecological and multifunctional practices.
The farm cultivates olives, almonds, cereals, legumes, and vegetables while preserving spontaneous biodiversity. Initiatives include sub-irrigation, erosion control, renewable energy, and agritourism. It also produces award-winning organic extra virgin olive oil under the Sicilia IGP label.
Visitors will explore intercropping trials with wheat and chickpeas, erosion control methods, biodiversity shelters, and reforestation efforts. A special focus is placed on weed management with tine harrows and mycorrhizal fertilization techniques.
The visit concludes with a walk through the new agroforestry plantation, where trees are planted in quincunx patterns and supported by native species. Discussions will highlight the participatory and educational approach of the farm in leading the agroecological transition.

The visit begins at the Lo Pilato organic farm, which operates across three areas within the Valley of the Temples. Founded in 2005, the farm includes historic almond and olive groves undergoing agroecological restoration to preserve genetic heritage and landscape identity.
The Bosco di Mandorli is home to ancient Sicilian almond varieties. The restoration project includes planting bitter almond saplings for grafting with historic cultivars. This work is guided by the Valle dei Templi Agroecological Biodistrict and aligned with Sicilian Regional Law 21/2021.
The second part of the visit leads to the Kolymbethra Garden, a historic and biodiverse landscape irrigated by ancient Greek aqueducts. Restored and managed by FAI since 1999, it features terraced citrus groves, Mediterranean scrubland, and a stream bordered by native trees.
The garden demonstrates traditional Arab irrigation, varietal biodiversity, and heritage farming practices that naturally align with modern agroecological principles. The landscape represents a fusion of archaeology, ecology, and cultural heritage.
