Agricultural modernization, driven by mechanization, the use of fertilizers, and the globalization of markets, increased production without the need to expand cultivated land. At the same time, deagrarianization and structural economic changes led to a reduction in cropland and pastures, while forest expansion became the dominant trend from the 20th century onwards. In the Mediterranean, these transformations have been particularly pronounced, with increasing agricultural specialization in the most productive areas and the reduction of cultivated land in less competitive regions. This shift raises concerns regarding its long-term sustainability and its social and ecological implications. Purpose and Research Questions This study aims to analyze the evolution of land use in France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal between 1880 and 2020, focusing on the specialization of Mediterranean regions. The research addresses the following key questions: How has the distribution of cropland, pastures, and forests evolved at national and regional levels? To what extent has agricultural specialization intensified in Mediterranean regions? What are the potential implications of these land use changes for sustainable food systems and agroecological transitions? Design, Methodology, and Approach The study is based on a historical reconstruction of land use changes using statistical sources and agricultural records. The database has been developed from records of the National Statistics Institutes of each country, FAOSTAT, and historical agricultural yearbooks. Time series of cropland, pastures, and forests have been reconstructed, allowing for the assessment of long-term trends and spatial variations at the national and regional scales. Data Collection and Analysis; Evidence The analysis relies on harmonized historical datasets to ensure comparability across countries and time periods. Trends in land use are analyzed using quantitative and spatial approaches, including the mapping of agricultural specialization patterns. The study identifies key shifts in land use and highlights the regions where changes have been most pronounced. Results and Implications The results indicate a generalized reduction in cropland, particularly in mountainous and inland regions, alongside a steady increase in forest cover due to agricultural abandonment and reforestation policies. Pastures have also declined, although with regional variations. Subnational maps reveal a progressive concentration of agriculture in fertile valleys and irrigated areas, while less profitable lands have been abandoned or converted into forests. In Mediterranean regions, the expansion of woody crops such as olive groves, vineyards, and fruit orchards has been particularly pronounced in southern Spain, Italy, and France. In contrast, inland areas have seen a reduction in arable crops and pastures, progressively replaced by forests. These land use changes have occurred in a context of demographic transformation, where population growth has been more significant in coastal and metropolitan areas, coinciding with zones of high agricultural specialization. This suggests a growing spatial mismatch between food production and consumption, with increasing reliance on imports to meet local demand. From an agroecological perspective, these transformations have led to a homogenization of landscapes and a reduction in agroecosystem diversity, affecting their resilience. The decline of cropland and pastures has limited the availability of intermediate habitats and promoted forest expansion dominated by fast-growing species, increasing vulnerability to wildfires. Moreover, the disconnection between production and consumption raises concerns about the sustainability of the current agrarian model, particularly in a context of growing dependence on external food sources. The agroecological transition in Mediterranean regions will require rethinking land management strategies to integrate agricultural production, biodiversity conservation, and ecological resilience. This study contributes to the understanding of long-term land use changes in the Mediterranean, providing a framework for analyzing their territorial, social, and environmental implications. The historical reconstruction of agriculture, pastures, and forests highlights structural patterns of landscape transformation and opens new avenues for research on the sustainability of agri-food systems in Southern Europe.
